October 14th is George Floyd’s birthday and to honor his life and memory, the Georgia Coalition for Equity in Education (GCEE) and Gwinnett SToPP are taking part in a “day of action” to #TeachTruth about structural racism and oppression.

Join us on October 14th at noon for a presentation titled “Towards a Decolonized Special Education System” by Nkoyo Effiong Lewis. Despite a federal right to a free appropriate public education (FAPE), too many students do not receive the services and support they need and are entitled to receive. It is time to disrupt the colonial beliefs + behaviors that prevent students with disabilities from thriving in schools. Together we will explore the policies and practices that deny access to students with disabilities, how the failings in special education perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline, and the profound impact of over-policing.
